Sociology & Liberation: Children, Adult Domination & Incest

In a way that is only paralleled by things like violence against disabled folks, the brutalization and dehumanization of children in modern society is one of the most overlooked forms of social domination and hierarchy, including in radical (left/anarchist/etc) circles. Moreover, it’s possibly the foremost type of oppression that is almost impossible to even talk about or make people question their own role and responsibilities therein. Because it hits far too close to home, in a similar way that most cis men will go to ridiculous lengths to avoid having to examine and deny their own participation (i.e. which doesn’t mean they’re evil individually, but not recognizing it is part of how and why it is reproduced!) in the patriarchal system and its culture of misogyny.

This page will be a list/resource for materials/readings/videos/podcasts/academic literature, on these issues. It’s obviously a work in progress, sorry if it’s a bit messy at the beginning. I found quite a lot of stuff in French, but I want to add more in English (if there’s interesting stuff in Spanish, I’d add it too)…

The dark realities of certain parts of the “sexual liberation” movement and other sexuality-oriented leftist practices

There’s no need to be a conservative or far right shithead trying to propagate moral outrage and anti-leftist violence/backlash, in order to acknowledge the deeply troubling history of pedophilic violence and child oppression in certain leftist and (seemingly) emancipatory social movements. It goes without saying that the horrific realities of abuse against children and minors in some postwar “progressive” or “leftist” movements (in countries like France, Germany, the U.S., and more), weren’t “excesses” of sexual liberation (as if it had to be scaled down, i.e. going back to a conservative patriarchal sexuality) but were forms of adult domination and sexual violence under the guise/pretense of “progress” and “emancipation” – while being nothing of the sort.

Let’s mention here only two prominent examples. The Odenwald school scandal (Germany) was explained on the podcast Behind the Bastards (link below!), but it was a private boarding school in Heppenheim founded on Edith and Paul Geheeb’s conception of ‘progressive education’ (in the early 20th c. this attracted Germany’s left-wing Protestant elite, and then continued to be part of leftist and “sexual liberation” milieus after WWII); however, we now know that hundreds of young people were sexually abused between 1960 and the 1990s. Unsurprisingly, one of Odenwald’s alumni was Daniel Cohn-Bendit, a student leader in May 1968 protests in France and later on Green party representative (for France and Germany) in the European Parliament, who also wrote positively and most likely himself committed pedophilic sexual abuse. Infamously, Hakim Bey, real name Peter Lamborn Wilson, who is known for his text on “Temporary Autonomous Zones”, was a child abuser and pro-pedophilia advocate/ideologue. He “[mixed] anarchist ideology into his paedophile discourse”, as Robert P. Helms wrote in 2005. But sadly, as anarchist historian Spencer Beswick pointed out – based on examining the anarchist publication Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed – Bey wasn’t the only one defending child rape in the anarchist milieu:

This reflects a wing of the anarchist movement that has long defended the “freedom” of people (usually men) to assault children using anarchist language. (…) Needless to say, this is a shameful aspect of the anarchist movement which should be ruthlessly exposed, criticized, and rejected. It calls into question the entire political and ethical approach of this wing of the anarchist movement. I refuse to defend or associate with it. Spencer Beswick

For example, one of the most important historical French anarchists, Sébastien Faure, sexually abused children, as Guillaume Davranche explained here. This is a very dark and troubling part of the anarchist movement, which must be ruthlessly criticized and abolished (there are still instances of this today, unfortunately).
